Last lesson of the term

How did it  go with your diaries?

You can mail them or share them with me!

This is our last lesson before Christmas..

So I thought we would look a little at Christmas and its traditions.

First of all, the man in red.

How to be a Santa Claus!

Now some cartoons

By the way, do you know what Santa's wife is called?

Why not write a short story about the following cartoon. It reminds me of the SpecSavers ads

Finally, we will have a bit of a sing-along!

Proverb bingo and High days and holidays

Today we will start where we finished off..

with our proverb bingo...

Put a proverb (first 2 words are enough) in each box and then let's do this!!!

Now we are in December. I want you to do some writing for the next week.

Please write a diary in English for the six days and bring it along on Monday on your computer.

The BBC did a program about some strange Swedish winter traditions. Here is the article.

Does it sound strange to you?

Discuss the 6 different things with your neighbour.
Do you agree or disagree with the writer?

No use your imagination. make up a new feast we can celebrate in December- especially now when we don't have as much snow as we had before!!

Finally some Christmas words

Bad day?

Ever had a bad day?

Well today we are going to meet Jack who has a really bad day.

He works in an office and has just come back from holiday.

Today we are going to:

  • learn office words
  • see a video
  • answer questions about it
  • talk about if we have ever had a bad day
Here is a song to get us going:-

After that let us do a proverb bingo!

That will be enough for today!!!!!!!

"Confessions"

Today we are going to look at a videoclip of some people talking about things they did when they were small.

There are some exercises I want you to do.

Then I would like you to tell another student about something you did when you were little that you got into trouble for.

We will try to focus a bit extra on one English speaking country until Christmas.

Today it is Australia.
We will see a film about the situation for the aborigines in Australia.

Can we compare the situation for the Same people in Scandinavia?

At the end of our class we will work on spelling.
We will look at 20 of the most commonly misspelled words.

No bingo today. But we will have one next week with hard to spell words.

Monday, 12 November 2018

Have you ever been embarrassed

Today we are going to start with an exercise from the British council

Here is the link.

We will go through the different parts of the dialogue.

Afterwards I want you to do a role play where one of you is Gemma and the other is Makayla.

Good luck?

How often do young people do things like this on social media? Is it very common.

Now we will look at an article in the Local. It is also about social media and our behaviour. Here it is.  Mike will ask you some questions about the text.

Something which can be embarrassing is how we use or say words. A fun way of doing this to make us laugh is using tongue twisters. Here is a clip where two people try some out

Finally today let us see how many of these jumbled words you can manage. They are to do with the autumn (fall)!

Monday, 5 November 2018

Welcome back!

Let's start off by hearing a little bit how you spent your mid-term break.

What, where, when, how and with whom?

Thank you for the excellent presentations about the different English speaking countries.

Sweden is not an English speaking country but is the top foreign country for speaking English (Please read the article and discuss with another person  why you think this is).

Let us do a simple quiz about the English-speaking countries.

Now we can learn (hopefully) some new words..
They are to do with handicraft and textiles

Here is the link.

Now we can do a bingo!!

Ready to present

Today it is time to give your country presentations.

You have 5 minutes for each presentation.

After that we will play a small game called

Yes/no game

People will ask you questions and you mustn't say "yes" or "no"

You have to try to survive for one minute!

Now we are going to watch a short video

How is your geography?

Show me your country on the map!

Finally, today we will finish off with a very easy exercise with some jumbled words.

Monday, 8 October 2018

8th October

Hi everybody!

To start off today I want you to warm-up by thinking about...
which animal would you like to be if you weren't a person? You have to say why you would chose that animal!
Now we are going to play Kim's game.
You will see a tray with 15 things on it. You will have almost one minute at look at them.

Then I will put a cloth back over the tray.
Try to write down the names of all fifteen things on a piece of paper. I wonder who will get the most!

Country presentations (Worksheets)
Here are some flags of English speaking countries.
Do you recognise them?
Match them with the other items on the worksheet.

Don't forget your country presentations. Next Monday there is NO LESSON as I will be in Ireland with the ninth graders from Excel.

So I want you to work on your presentations. They have to be ready when we meet next time in week 43.

Now comes your lesson challenge. It is a clip about Ariana Grande before she became famous.

Here is the link

Please use your headphones and watch the clip.

Then do the Comprehension questions (multiple choice) and the vocabulary gap fill.

Then discuss the following question with a friend:

Who is your favourite singer? How did he or she start singing?

We can't finish off a class without some spelling. So I will give you a worksheet.

Down to business

Today we start off by getting you talking by using a conversation starter.... The we'll be looking through the curriculum and grade guidelines for the course. (These are written in Swedish)

I then want you to write  5-10 activities that we can do to assess your level of English and give you a grade which corresponds to your level.

Discuss you ideas with someone else who is at your level.

News in Sweden.
Check out today's edition of the "Local". Work with a friend
Choose an item of news and present it very briefly to Mike (write key words if necessary)

Now let us do some spelling. As last time, the words get harder towards the end....

Now choose any 10 words and make them into a little story.

Write your story on paper or on your computer (whichever is easiest)

Project
Your homework for this course will be to prepare a presentation.
5 minutes talking about an English- speaking country.
Your presentations will be in week 43 (Monday 22 October).
We will distribute the countries today.
You can give some general information and then some interesting area for you

Lesson 2

Welcome to the blog for the Mother tongue course.
On the right side I have put some resources for learning.

A warm-up exercise

Today we start off with an article about social media and young people.

Listen to it and read it HERE

Did you learn any new words?

Now I want you to discuss if it is the same in Sweden.

What social media services do you and your friends use?

Now, let's have a look at what your English is like
Go in on the following page
https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/test-your-english
and try the first test  (General English).

How did you get on?

Now we will do some spelling.

I will read the sentence and you spell the word.

If we have time we will do a bingo.

Try to use as many of the bingo words as possible in a mini-story!!

Next week we will look at the curriculum (kursplan)  and find the right level for our work
